Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Search Engine Optimisation involves  improving the way in which a website provides information to the search engines. A web page is made up of more than just what the user can see through a web browser and a search engine has many tools which it uses to assertain two key things – what the web page is about to ascertain relevance and how popular the page is to ascertain “interestingness” for the user. These two broad factors will affect the ranking of the site.

On Site SEO

Anything that you do on your own website to improve Search engine traffic is referred to as “on site” (or on page) SEO. This includes things like title tags and site structure as well as the content on the site. By getting things right, it makes it easy for search engines to know what your site is about. On site SEO ensures search engines can accurately work out a pages relevance to a search query but also ensures a good user experience which will also improve conversion.

Off Site SEO

The majority of SEO activity once a site is built, is improving the perceived interestingness of a page. This primarily involves link building and building a good overall inbound link structure to your site.  It is a hugely involved area, suffice to say, more links are generally better than less links though not all links are equal in value.
